GetSkeweredTO Food Truck Cake

It's been a while since I have posted - this will be my first post of 2017.  Hope your year is going great so far - it is going wonderfully for a friend of mine, Chef Mel.  She went after her dreams, left the corporate world and started her own Food Truck in Toronto called Get Skewered.
She held a soft launch last week and what a success!!  I am so proud of her and surprised her with a little cake.  If you are in Toronto and looking for healthy and clean eats like Polynesian pork, crab cakes with creole mustard sauce and Moroccan tahini Chicken... you will find her on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.   How amazing does her truck look?

50th Birthday Airplane Cake

I was lucky enough to be asked to make another airplane cake.  This time, the model was a Piper Lance and it was for a 50th birthday celebration.
Here's the top view of the cake.  Isn't that a cute quote to add to the cake!

40th Birthday Cake: Porsche Cake

I hope everyone is having a great week so far!  We've been having some warmer temperatures here in Toronto - it does not feel like winter at all.  In the peak afternoon - you really could drive a convertible, so I thought this cake would be appropriate.

It's a chocolate convertible porsche cake for a 40th birthday celebration with the personalized license plate of "OVERTHEHILL".
Have a great week!  I will be back here next week to feature another Guest Cake Designer's creations.

Airplane Cake

How do you combine a retirement cake and a wedding anniversary cake?

The couple was celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary and the husband was also retiring as an Air Canada pilot.  This is what their daughter surprised them with at their party.
The airplane and top tier was vanilla butter cake and bottom tier was chocolate velvet cake.
Have a great week and don't forget to enter our contest for a fabulous Cupcake Recipe book: The Cupcake Diaries.  Contest end this Thursday at midnight and open for those in US and Canada.

Camaro Z28 Cake

It's been a while since I posted a car cake... and this one sure is slick!  It's a vanilla butter Camaro Z28 cake for a 60th birthday.
And of course, the final touch, the birthday boy with his favorite car and dog.

Bar Mitzvah: Gold Maserati Cake

It all started with a gold maserati cake....

Then add a few tire cakes, 4 to be exact....  Stack them a little offset.. and....
....add the Gold Maserati on top and voila!  You have a fabulous, eye-catching 5-tier centerpiece cake for a Bar Mitzvah.
A view from the top.
Cake Decorator's TipFor cake tiers that are identical in design and shape (as in the tires above), ensure that you somehow mark each with the cake flavor.  You way want to do this discretely or in the back of the cake for yourself and the servers.  I always provide printed instructions of all the details of the cake and serving instructions.

50th Birthday Party: 1979 Corvette Cake

A perfect surprise 50th birthday cake:  a black 1979 Corvette L82 chocolate cake.   The birthday boy's spouse had been planning this surprise for over 6 months.  I guess it would be more of a surprise if it was the real thing!
And here are some photos on how it all began.... Somehow, I had to turn these chocolate cake layers into a sleek corvette.

2nd Birthday: Yellow Tractor Cake

This past weekend was my nephew Maseo's 2nd birthday.  Last year I made him a fun Heffalump Cake and this year it was a tractor cake.  He actually calls dump trucks, excavator and any yellow truck a tractor.
Everything is completely edible on the cake.  It was lemon butter cake with vanilla swiss meringue buttercream.
He loved the cake and really wanted to play with the tractor.  I think it was confusing for him whether it was a toy or a cake.  We let him remove the sugarpaste wheels before we cut it up...  he then pointed at it and said "Broken".

Car Cakes: A VW and an Audi

Who wouldn't want a cake of their car?  I love getting requests for cars because it is always a surprise and you can really personalize it for that person.  And the front view of the car always looks like a big smile!

This VW was for a surprise 30th birthday for a guy who loves his VW and of course, his dog.   His wife was planning the surprise for about 6 months ahead - and it worked!

This Audi was also for a surprise birthday.  His fiance requested a cake his car and a sugarpaste figure of him with his best friend.

50th Birthday Party: 1959 Porsche Cake

What a fun and fabulous surprise for a 50th birthday party... a fiery red 1959 Porsche... Cake!

This birthday boy loves nice cars and keeps his very clean, so I added him in sugarpaste shining up the car.

I loved making the detail on the front porsche logo - I'm thankful for very fine paintbrushes.

1970 Chevelle Cake

I love making car cakes. However, I must admit that they end up being a little shorter or fatter because I hate carving off so much cake - but I was reminded that carved cakes are an "artists rendition".

So, here is the 1970 Chevelle Cake I made this past weekend for a 30th surprise party. This is the car that is on the Fast and Furious movies - see pic below.

This cake was 3 layers of chocolate fudge cake with dark chocolate swiss meringue buttercream covered in fondant.  My favorite thing to make on cake cars is always the tires and its treads.

The weirdest thing was that after I delivered the cake - I swear I saw about 7 shined up Chevelles on the road.  They seemed to be everywhere.

60th Birthday Cake: Motorcycle Cake

For some reason, I can hear Steppenwolf in the background when I think of this cake... "Get your motor running, head out on the highway..."

This past weekend I made a special 60th birthday cake for a client of mine who has a nice shiny red and yellow Motorcycle. It really is so fun to recreate someone's special bike or car. I get so excited to see or hear their reaction to the creation.

This birthday cake was 4 layers of lemon cake with swiss meringue buttercream covered in fondant with handmade sugarpaste decorations.

It's a mini MINI Cooper Cake!

What is cuter than a mini MINI Cooper Cake?  This was such a fun cake to decorate - I loved adding in and painting on the car details.

A friend told me that mini cars are popular because they look like a happy face - and that is exactly what I was thinking when I was working on this cake.

I can't wait to do another car cake - I think it will be a VW next time!
