70th Birthday Cake: Stacked Books Cake

I get so many requests to customize a cake for someone special, but they don't have an idea what they'd like.  I always ask them to describe the person, their hobbies, profession and whatever you can think of.

Sometimes we end up deciding on one theme and sometimes we can decide on more than one.  An easy way to blend different hobbies is a stack of books.

For this client, the birthday boy was turning 70, he was an Actuary, loved hockey and also wines of France.  He also loved Tom Petty, so I made a sugar version of the Greatest Hits CD which is not in the picture because it was still drying when I took the photo.

Baby Shower Cakes: More Cuteness!

Lots of cute photos today.  So, I'll just get right to it....  This 4-tier cake was for a baby shower and the design was inspired by the cute monkey invitation below.
I love this invitation.  Not sure who the designer is, but if you do, let me know so I can link over to them.
Here is a view from the top.  The flavors were Strawberry Vanilla cake with strawberry buttercream and, my newest flavor, Orange Dream cake with vanilla swiss meringue buttercream.
And how cute are these handmade sugar Ralph Lauren shoes.
Here's another baby shower cake - I just love the block lettering and the soft colors .  The father-to-be ordered this cake.  He sent me a photo of the babies room, so I tried to match the colors of pale moss green shade on the white textured board.
Here is a view from the top.
And the flavor.... 8 layers of chocolate sour cream cake with vanilla swiss meringue buttercream.

Twilight: New Moon Cake

Sometimes I wonder what I'd do without Google.... I often get cake requests for cartoons, characters or movies that I have never seen at all.  It will be something like Ben10, Pororo, Ugly Dolls or kids movies that I've never heard of.  With google, I have downloaded lots of picture and even watched lots of snippets of cartoons to get images for the cakes.

A few months back, I received a request to design a Twilight cake.  It wasn't as popular as it is today and I had no idea what that meant... but I noticed it was a trending topic on Twitter and followed the links to the web.  What would I do with out the internet?  Do research at a library, have my client fax or mail me a picture....
The book was alternating layers of chocolate sour cream and vanilla butter cake with vanilla swiss meringue buttercream.  The apple was lemon cake.

It's not your typical Baby Shower Cake!

The baby shower cake was a hit! I think this might be my favourite cake so far!

It wasn't your typical baby shower - it was a very fancy lunch at Pangaea in Yorkville. Gentlemen and kids were allowed and there wasn't any opening of presents with ooh's and aaahs. That definitely would have scared the men away! :-)

This 4-tiered cake served over 80 people and was layers of rich chocolate cake with swiss meringue buttercream. All decorations were handmade out of sugarpaste - I think my favourite decorations were the ducks.
