Another July Wedding

It was a beautiful Saturday wedding at a golf and country club. Everything was elegantly done up with a hint of baseball theme - including the cake. The bride and groom are avid baseball players, so they wanted that to be encorporated, but not overpower the cake.

So, I designed the 3-tier wedding cake using their blue wedding colour and shined it up with pearl dust wherever I could. The topper was a round baseball cake with a handmade sugarpaste cap with their initials on it.

Each tier of the cake was 4 layers each, alternating chocolate and vanilla butter cake with swiss meringue buttercream.

A Hot July Wedding

It was a very hot July day for a wedding whereby air conditioning is a must! However, when I delivered this cake, I had to assemble it on site because they wanted the cake on a stand - so it is difficult to transport it that way.

With the heat and mugginess in the place, the fondant ribbons were very difficult to put on. But even worse, there were no real lights in the place. It was super dim as the lighting was made up of Christmas lights and some mini-lamps on the tables. I couldn't see a thing. The people on site indicated that they just didn't have any other lights other then the emergency lights (which couldn't be turned on).

So, I know it doesn't sound that bad or look that bad, but it was a nightmare for me. I really wasn't happy with the result. And the worst part was that I couldn't see any of the flaws until I downloaded the pictures and the flash revealed it. Oh well - now I know to also ask if there are lights in the room that can be adjusted.

Cake Decorator's Tip: Ask if there is air conditioning in the facility AND whether there is enough lighting or you can control the lighting when you set up the cake.

A BlackBerry Cake - no, not the fruit

This is the second BlackBerry cake that I have made. The first one was much smaller, this cake feeds 25-30 people. It is 3 layers of sour cream chocolate cake with swiss meringue buttercream and covered in fondant

It was so much fun to make - I love painting on the details. It was for a 70th birthday for a guy who loves his BlackBerry.

A Big Blue Whale

It's a big blue whale! I made this cake for a software design and management company called the Jonah Group. They were celebrating their 7th birthday.
Originally, for this techie crowd, I was trying to make a spout at the top with ones and zeros coming out. But at the last minute, I couldn't make it work without using inedible items (which I didn't want to do.
The cake was alternating layers of chocolate and vanilla butter cake with swiss meringue buttercream covered in blue fondant. They sent me some pictures from their event - I like the picture of the whale cake being eaten, but he's still smiling! :-)

A Cake for the Ladies

I decorated this cake last night which was for a "girls weekend getaway". I've been wanting to do this cake for a while - I got the idea from one of my cake books called Confetti Cakes.

It's 4 layers of cake - alternating chocolate and vanilla with swiss meringue buttercream.

Here is a view from the back - and yes, it is all edible, even the grass (which is made out of coconut with green food coloring). Cake can be so much fun!

A Christening Cake with lots of animals

I made this cake this past weekend for a Christening. It is a 2-tier cake - bottom tier is 3-layers of chocolate velvet cake with swiss meringue buttercream and the top tier is 3-layers of vanilla butter cake with swiss meringue buttercream.

The cake is covered in fondant and the animals are all handmade with sugarpaste. My favorites were the giraffe and panda.

I made a sleeping baby in a tiny bed on the top. I actually guessed on the baby boy's haircolour when I was up late making the final details... somehow I lucked out as the boy did have blondish, red hair. Next time I will definitely ask my customer beforehand - I really could've messed that one up!
