Powerlifting Cakes n' more

I have been blogging for almost 8 years now and February was the first month that I didn't post a single thing.  In the last year, I have cut back significantly on the number of custom orders that I take to focus on my other life, as a Personal Trainer.  I still have reserved spots for my regular cake clients/family, but mostly trying to balance out my time since I also took up Powerlifting.
Back in May 2015, Team Maximum Barbell convinced me to sign up and train for a Powerlifting competition.  Based on your age group and weight category, you attempt to lift as much weight as possible (with strict form) for one repetition in the Squat, Bench Press and Deadlift.  You get 3 attempts at each and your highest weight in each lift count towards your total score.  Sound fun?  Yes, it really is!!!

Since then, I've competed in 4 events including the 2015 Ontario Provincials winning a Gold Medal and 2016 Canadian Championships winning a Bronze Medal.
Along the way, I was able to make some fun sweet things.  This was a 40th birthday cake (with a weightlifting belt) for a teammate's western themed party.
Cupcakes with sugar weight plates for a Powerlifting for Women seminar.
Fondant-covered sugar cookies.
I am very excited about the upcoming year - some more Powerlifting events for me and always exciting to see what cakes my clients will ask me to create.

Baby Shower for Runners

Having logged many, many, many miles myself, I loved creating this custom cake.  The parents-to-be are amazing running athletes and coaches.  These little handmade sugarpaste Saucony runners along with baby's first race bib were perfect for the cake.
Here's a close-up of the super small details that I painted on the bib.  The bib number is the due date - wishing them all the best!

Wedding Cake with a Hint of Purple and Football

Several year ago, the groom was the recipient of this Raider's Helmet Cake.  I had fun keeping this cake simple and elegant with a touch of purple, a touch of the Raiders and also the couple's two cats.  I didn't get a good close-up of the handmade sugarpaste characters - but I wanted it to look "Superman-like".

CrossFit Cake

A cake for the CrossFitter, Powerlifter or weightlifter in your life.  I loved making this cake as it crosses over with my other career as a Personal Trainer.  I have to admit, last year I did focus a lot more on training and nutrition for clients.  This year, I do plan to do the same - but I do love this cake thing so you'll definitely see more creations from me.
I hope you had a great start to 2015 and I wish you all the best!

Running Shoe Cake

Any runners out there?  Any marathoners out there?  How fabulous is it to cross that finish line for the very first time?  A perfect occasion for a cake with a handmade sugarpaste replica medal of their Disney Marathon medal.
I had so much fun making this cake as I have always been a runner and one day hope to get to Disney to run their marathon!

Sports Themed Cakes

In the past, I've done some sporty cakes related to working out, hockey and wrestling.  Here's a collection of some more cakes and cupcakes with a sports theme:

For the football fan, Raiders or Vikings....
This football field cake was a surprise groom's cake for a groom who played for the Toronto Argonauts and the bride who was an Argos cheerleader.
Cupcakes for the Nike basketball shoe lover.... (yes, these fondant toppers took me forever...)
Cupcakes to enjoy after the gym...
And finally, cupcakes for those who love curling.

Bar Mitzvah: Hockey Cake

Who is lucky enough to get 10 cakes for their birthday?  This birthday boy who celebrated his Bar Mitzvah at EZone which is indoor sports and entertainment complex.

I was able to blend in his love for hockey, Pittsburgh Penguins and personalize everything it for his special day.
I loved how it all turned out and everything was completely edible.  I would say the hardest part was making 2 matching skates.
When I made carved cakes, I always bake extra cake, just in case.  So, I added in these mini-cake pucks.  Wouldn't this be a great idea for a boys birthday and everyone gets their own puck!

Cakes for Boys... of all ages!

Lately, I've been posting lots of cute baby shower and birthday cakes.  Today I decdied to post some cakes that are a little bit more masculine.  This selection of cakes were for little boys....  and big boys too.

This wolverine cake was all edible except for the toothpicks holding the sugarpaste blades in place.  The cake was half chocolate sour cream cake, half lemon and the fist was carved chocolate cake.
This WWE cake was chocolate sour cream with vanilla swiss meringue buttercream.  The figures, Jeff Hardy and the Undertaker were handmade with sugarpaste.  The rope around the ring was also edible - it was shoelace licorice that I purchased (which was very hard to work with....)
And of course, a Star Wars cake and cupcakes - a very popular request also.  The yoda cake I made last year continues to be a popular blog post.
Hope you enjoyed these cakes!  Have a wonderful week!

Workout Cake

Aside from making cakes, fitness is a big part of my life.  Many of you might not know this, but I spend half my time as a Personal Trainer.  So, when I had the opportunity to design this cake - I was so excited!  I feel like this cake defines me!

This cake was for the grand opening party of a new fitness club, Elements for Women, in the Yonge and Eglinton area of Toronto.
The yoga mat is Chocolate Blackout cake with vanilla swiss meringue buttercream.  The medicine ball was Strawberry Vanilla cake with strawberry buttercream.  The dumbbell was Vanilla Butter cake with swiss meringue buttercream.
I love receiving photos of my cakes from the party.  Here is the cake at the beginning of the night - does anyone notice the big hand impression on the yoga mat?  I guess someone wanted to see if it was real :-)
And here is the cake at the end of the night.   Looks like everyone enjoyed it!
